People Sound directed by Samuel Puentes installed D.A.S. Aero systems for the breathtaking concert of Roger Waters.
Bogotá based People Sound directed by Samuel Puentes installed D.A.S. Aero systems for the breathtaking concert of Roger Waters, ex-lead singer of mythical band Pink Floyd. The concert took place at the Simón Bolívar Park, in Bogotá, with an attendance of over 25,000 people prepared to enjoy the live performance of this rock legend.
In terms of sound reinforcement for live events in Colombia, the implementation of a 5.1 surround system proved to be a turning point. The press referred to the use of the surround system with comments such as “live music perfection” or “the before and after of live concerts in Colombia.” These comments reflect the top quality performance and realism of the surround system in a vast open space such as the Simón Bolívar Park. Sound effects, lasers, projected images and spectacular lighting were combined to highlight the experience for Waters’s fans.
People Sound counted on the valuable collaboration of an impressive team of producers and technicians. Amongst them were Alejandro Puentes (lighting), Carlos Bocanegra (General Technical Production), Diego Torres (Sound Engineer from Medellín), all of which directed the different technical teams which painstaking prepared the concert during the previous days.
The massive sound reinforcement system comprised 24 Aero 48 line array systems as the main FOH system, and eight Aero 28A systems as down-fill. The surround system was made up of 16 Aero 38A to handle the surround effect on the left side and another 16 for the right. Additionally, eight Aero 28A systems at each rear side (right and left) and eight Compact 2 systems ground-stacked below the stage. A relay tower composed of 16 passive systems completed the set up.
The stage monitoring was carried out via D.A.S. 12” SML-12A Stage Monitors. These monitors are powered two-way systems that have a 500 W amplifier for the low frequencies and a 100 W amplifier for the high frequencies. The components used include a 12” neodymium speaker for bass reproduction and a neodymium compression driver with a 3” titanium diaphragm and a 1.5” exit.
The system tuning was accomplished with Smaartlive 5.0, specifically for the phase adjustment as well as the frequency and delay responses. Signal processing for the long, mid and short throw of the systems was handled by six BSS 355 processors which also controlled the passive systems as well as the time control of the different channels of the 5.1 surround system. All these highly sophisticated procedures resulted in an astonishing system performance giving the event a unique character which attracted the attention of several other sound rental companies, very impressed with the 360º of clear and powerful surround sound that the D.A.S. Aero line array systems were able to provide.
As far as lighting is concerned, it is worth mentioning the use of a Super Laser with a prism effect that passing horizontally over the spectators projected the logo of Roger Waters tour. The lightening effects were enhanced with screens projecting psychedelic images so attuned with the 1970’s fashion and the Pink Floyd era.
The show lasted more than two and a half hours and combined a review of what were Waters’s biggest hits during the golden age of the longed-for British band together with a selection of the songs created by Waters during his 20 year solo career. Several generations congregated to the concert of one of rock’s living idols. The audience’s emotions come to a climax when 10 Colombian children appeared on stage accompanying the 10 musicians that were with Waters, to be the chorus of the unforgettable song “Another Brick in the Wall” – the legendary single of the album “The Wall.”
All the specialized press coincided with the fact that they had witnessed one of the most impressive concerts in the history of Colombia. Press articles highlighted the cooperation between the tour technicians, People Sound and the outstanding performance of the D.A.S. line array systems. The organizers and technicians responsible for the concert’s success were satisfied to have been part of this magical night in Bogotá.
